World Heart Day is a global health awareness campaign focused on cardiovascular health, established through the initiative of the World Heart Federation (WHF) in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1999. The idea was proposed by Dr. Antoni Bayés de Luna, who served as President of the World Heart Federation from 1997 to 1999. The first official World Heart Day was celebrated on September 24, 2000, and the observance was later fixed to September 29 beginning in 2011. As an international campaign rather than a celebration belonging to a single country, World Heart Day brings together health organizations, governments, communities, and individuals worldwide to promote awareness of cardiovascular disease (CVD).
World Heart Day belongs to the health awareness, cardiovascular health, public health, disease prevention, and health education sectors. Held annually on September 29, the campaign aims to increase public awareness of heart disease and stroke, encourage healthier lifestyles, promote early detection and prevention, and advocate for better access to cardiovascular healthcare. Led globally by the World Heart Federation, the campaign uses educational programs, community activities, public events, and digital initiatives to encourage people around the world to make heart health a priority.
