CentOS (Community Enterprise Operating System) is a free, open-source Linux distribution designed to provide a stable, secure, and enterprise-class computing platform. The project was officially launched in 2004 in the United States by Gregory Kurtzer, together with Lance Davis and several open-source contributors, as a community-supported rebuild of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). Created to deliver enterprise-grade reliability without licensing costs, CentOS quickly became one of the most widely adopted Linux operating systems for servers, cloud infrastructure, web hosting, and enterprise applications.
Since its establishment, CentOS has been maintained by a global open-source community and later became closely associated with Red Hat, which began sponsoring the project in 2014. In 2020, the project shifted its primary focus to CentOS Stream, a rolling-release platform that serves as the upstream development branch for future Red Hat Enterprise Linux releases, enabling developers and organizations to contribute to and test upcoming enterprise features.
As one of the most influential Linux distributions, CentOS operates within the fields of operating systems, open-source software, cloud computing, server administration, and enterprise IT infrastructure. It has been widely used to host websites, manage databases, deploy virtualization environments, run containerized applications, and support mission-critical enterprise workloads.
