Vietnam Airlines is the national flag carrier of Vietnam, with its origins dating back to January 1956, when the Vietnamese government established the Civil Aviation Authority, marking the beginning of the country’s civil aviation industry. Based in Hanoi, Vietnam, the airline developed from a small government-operated aviation service into a major international airline. Vietnam Airlines was officially established as a state-owned air transport enterprise in April 1993, followed by the formation of Vietnam Airlines Corporation on May 27, 1995. Rather than being founded by a single private individual, the airline was established through government initiatives to develop Vietnam’s aviation sector. Its current chairman is Dang Ngoc Hoa, while Le Hong Ha serves as President and Chief Executive Officer.
Vietnam Airlines operates in the commercial aviation, passenger transportation, air cargo, and travel industries, providing domestic and international flights that connect Vietnam with destinations across Asia, Europe, Australia, and other regions. Recognized by its distinctive golden lotus emblem, the airline offers scheduled passenger services, cargo transportation, and related travel services while promoting Vietnamese culture and hospitality. As a member of the SkyTeam global airline alliance since 2010, Vietnam Airlines benefits from international partnerships that expand its global connectivity and passenger services. Through continued fleet modernization, route expansion, and service development, the airline plays an important role in Vietnam’s tourism industry, international trade, and global transportation network.
